PARENT SUPPORT GROUP

When a child has learning differences or ADHD, it can impact dynamics of the entire family. Here, there is the freedom to discuss the challenges you face with others who truly understand--to share experiences, effective strategies, and encouragement. Parent Support Groups are open to the public, to ANY parent of a child with learning differences or ADHD. Each month, an esteemed local psychologist will be in attendance to offer their expertise.

Meetings are one Tuesday a month, from 7:00pm-8:00pm, and topics vary each month. Coffee and soft drinks will be available, so please plan to arrive early. We meet in the Multipurpose Room at The de Paul School, which can be accessed by entering the building through the doors to the right of the main entrance (facing the school).

Tuesday, March 20:
This meeting's topic is Different Siblings...Different Needs. Dr. Joe Edwards, esteemed clinical psychologist, will lead us in a discussion on understanding and encouraging the different strengths and needs within the family. We will also discuss how to best manage siblings' wants and needs when at least one of those children faces learning challenges or ADHD.

Upcoming 2012 Dates:
April 17-Power Plays, with Dr. Felicia Smith
May 15-Providing Help while Preventing Helplessness, with Dr. Felicia Smith

If there are any subjects you would like to be addressed in one of these meetings, please email with those suggestions.

By participating in the Parent Support Group, parents acknowledge and agree to follow the goals and guidelines identified by the group: Confidentiality, Courtesy, and Community. Parent Support Groups are run by parents of children with learning differences or ADHD and local psychologists. Strategies and advice may not be affiliated with or endorsed by The de Paul School.

SEMINARS

Twice a year, The de Paul School partners with local clinical psychologists to present seminars on topics relevant to parents and those who work with children. Seminars are open to anyone in the community, and cost $5 per person, which includes coffee and dessert refreshments. Registration is online, and begins at least two weeks prior to the seminar date.

Previous Seminars:

Building Family Resiliency: Relationships, Routines, & Rituals This seminar was presented on February 16, 2012, and addressed the questions: How well does your family deal with stress or change? Is your foundation at home a strong one? Is your child adaptable? Presenters Dr. Lisa Powell and Dr. Laurie Mount Grimes, clinical psychologists who specialize in working with children and families, focused on the most important ingredients for raising emotionally and behaviorally healthy children – resilient children – who can thrive during tough times. They presented research-based findings on ways to ensure healthy functioning and how to increase "protective factors," particularly through strengthening parent-child relationships. This discussion also outlined the benefits of routines and rituals in supporting family functioning. The slides and handouts of the evening are available below.

Relief: Managing the Stress of Raising School Age Children This seminar was presented on September 22, 2011. This subject was relevant to both parents and to those who work with children. Dr. David Causey, a psychologist in the Metro Louisville area, presented on this topic and provided much insight and many practical strategies. Three additional psychologists, Dr. Felicia Smith, Dr. Joe Edwards, and Dr. Bryan Carter, then participated in a panel discussion and question-and-answer session. Dr. Causey’s slides of the evening are available below.

PRESCREENING OPPORTUNITIES

March 10, 2012
Is Your Child at Risk for Reading Difficulties?

The de Paul School is sponsoring a free community screening of language skills, for children in grades 1st through 4th. The experienced staff will work 1:1 with students to help assess each child's progression in basic reading and language skills. de Paul staff will then share feedback with parents, including recommendations which may help your child in school and at home. Call today if you believe that your child is not reading at grade level, or not performing up to expectations in schoolwork. This community event is limited to 20 students, by appointment only. Call (502) 459-6131, prior to March 10th, to reserve your screening appointment.

COMPASSION CELEBRATION

The de Paul faculty and staff decided long ago that we wanted to begin planting the seeds of philanthropy, self-service and compassion into the lives of our students. Each year, teams within the school identify different charities or causes in which they feel they can make a difference. As students reach out to others, they not only plant seeds of change in the world; they plant seeds within themselves that can blossom into lifelong commitments to philanthropy. This dedication to helping and improving the lives of others in need has become the true essence of our "school spirit."

On December 16, 2011, de Paul held our annual Compassion Celebration. Parents and guests were invited to our "harvest" event, where we were able to share the fruits of our labor. Students from Team 1 to Team 8 shared how they have made a difference in the lives of others, and how that very act of giving has changed them forever.
