Summer ProgramSummer Enrichment and Summer Enjoyment for Students Who Learn Differently Summer ProgramThe de Paul School Summer Program includes morning academic classes, afternoon fun camp classes, and an extended day/early morning program. The instruction is designed for students in grades 1-8 who need additional remediation and practice during the summer months. Research shows that children do lose academic skills over the summer break without a program of practice or enrichment. On average, student' math scores are two months lower after summer than before. Students with reading disabilities tend to lose more than two months on their reading scores over the summer break. Such loss not only negates some time and effort of the previous year, but it consumes time from the following year, since concepts and skills must be re-taught. Two months of loss in skills can actually cost four months of school instruction. For students whose learning progresses at a slower-than-average rate, a two months drop in grade-level scores represents an even greater portion of the school year lost. Academic InstructionStudents who learn differently thrive in this small group setting. The 5:1 ratio gives the teachers the opportunity to focus instruction to meet specific needs. Daily instruction is offered in the areas of: Reading, Language, and Math. The summer academic instruction allows the students to strengthen and / or maintain their skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic over the summer months. While students with reading disabilities typically lose skills over the summer, their peers who are strong readers often gain skills over the summer as they continue to read. This means that the knowledge gap becomes even more significant. Using an organized, multi-sensory and attention based approach, our teacher’s help children not only improve skills, but also gain self-confidence when going into the next academic year. Our highly-trained faculty is skilled in providing the teaching difference necessary to help students become more successful in their conventional classrooms. Afternoon Fun Camp ClassesAfternoon fun camp classes include weekly themes such as science, sports, computer, performing and visual arts. Friday afternoons are designated for off-campus outings or special presentations, depending on the weekly theme. The fun camps are a great way for students to be exposed to different creative outlets. Parents also find these hours to be very helpful in easing their transportation difficulties. An extended day/early morning program is offered for those parents who may need to drop-off their students before 8:45 daily start. A light breakfast will be served and students can participate in recreation before beginning their morning classes. This six-week program is June 14-July 23, 2010. Deadline for admission including admissions testing is May 31, 2010.
