Language Arts

Students should practice the following skills:

  • Read 15-30 minutes per day.
  • Write in a journal two times each week.  This can be kept like a diary or can contain creative writing stories.  Workbooks at KSS or the Parent Teacher Store have great writing prompts and story starters.
  • Summarize your reading in a paragraph 2-3 times each week.  The paragraph should have four or more sentences.   (See the 6 Traits information below).
  • Answer parent-led comprehension questions 1-2 times per week.

a. Describe the main character

b. Describe the setting

c. What is the problem in the story?

d. How do you feel about what happened?

e. What would you do if you were the main character?

f. What do you think will happen next?

g. Write in your own words what you have read so far

  • Workbooks containing vocabulary, mechanics, grammar and usage can be purchased from KSS or the Parent Teacher Store.  Spectrum workbooks are a good, well-tested format.  Others are available as well.
  • All spelling words we have covered are in your yellow spelling notebook.  Spelling rules as well as other terms and notes can be studied in the language arts notebook.
  • Students would also benefit from reading maps, clocks, menus, and newspapers.
